M&I Bank will host the Border Showdown Pep Rally to benefit Harvesters Community Food Network from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, November 20 at the Country Club Plaza branch parking lot at 800 W. 47th Street. The bank will be collecting food and money on behalf of the University of Kansas Jayhawks and University of Missouri Tigers. Attendees are encouraged to come and support their teams and donate to Harvesters to determine which school can collect the most donations. Attendees also can enter to win prizes and enjoy snacks, refreshments and games, compliments of M&I Bank, as Sports Radio 810 WHB broadcasts live from the event. Downtown Overland Park presents the annual Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony on Thursday, November 20. Activities begin at 5:00 p.m., and Mayor Gerlach lights the tree at 6:15 p.m. Activities will include hayrack rides, Dickens carolers, Santa Claus, plus music and dance performances. Mayor Gerlach will present a check to Sunflower House from the Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting Fund. Donations are being accepted. Neighbors Construction is holding a Fall Open House, in lieu of a Holiday Open House, 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, November 20 at 9800 Legler, Lenexa. Cocktails and Fall appetizers prepared by Renee Kelly’s will be served 5-8 p.m. The open house will be held in conjunction with Harvesters. Due to an overwhelming demand for holiday food baskets, SAFEHOME needs your help to ensure everyone enjoys a delicious Thanksgiving meal. Donations are greatly needed to fill 41 holiday food baskets. Items needed include: turkeys, corn, dinner rolls, boxed stuffing, green beans, dessert mixes, canned cranberry sauce, cream of mushroom soup, instant mashed potatoes and gravy. Get a jump start on holiday shopping at the Holiday Market in downtown Overland Park with crafts, food and gift items from the area’s unique crafters, bakers and retailers from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday in November. Music from local choirs, bell choirs and other groups will be featured at the clock tower each Saturday during the market. Stay after for lunch and more shopping downtown. The Downtown Overland Park Partnership is accepting applications for Holiday Market vendors. Single spots are $75 for the season, and double spots are $125. Protect yourself before the flu season hits at a FREE walk-in flu shot clinic, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on Saturday, November 22, at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center Outpatient Pavilion at Prairie Star Parkway. The new facility is located on the southwest corner of K-7 and Prairie Star Parkway in Lenexa. Free vaccinations will be available for the first 300 individuals at the clinic. Patients must be 18 years of age to receive a shot and pregnant women should check with their physician before being vaccinated. Chick-fil-A stores are collecting shoe boxes for Operation Christmas  Child. Shoe boxes can be dropped off through Saturday, November 22.  A coupon for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich will be given to anyone who brings in a shoebox.

The 16th Annual Enchanted Evening of Cocktails & Cuisine, a kick off to Marillac’s Enchanted Forest, will be presented by Marillac at 5:30 p.m. on November 22 in the Sprint Festival Plaza at Kansas City’s historic Union Station. This elegant affair will feature an evening of gourmet food, cocktails, dessert, and live and silent auctions. Sponsorships are still available at various levels. The Arts & Recreation Foundation of Overland Park announces that The Friends of the Arboretum will host the annual Holiday Luminary Walk, 5-8:30 p.m., November 28-29 and December 5-6 at the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, 8909 W. 179th St.  Attendees will enjoy a mile of candlelit trails, holiday music, lighted displays, refreshments, bonfires, hot apple cider and more. The Friends of Art will host the third annual Nutcracker Tea Party on December 7 at the Ritz Charles Overland Park. Performances are at noon and 4 pm. As children arrive they are sprinkled with fairy dust and hosted to tea with pink "champagne" and finger sandwiches, fruit and desserts. While enjoying their meal, they are treated to visits from Nutcracker Dancers. Then on to a one-hour abbreviated performance of the magical Nutcracker.
